Djibril Sagna

Djibril is self-taught, lives on la Gorée Island and has been making masks all his life from whatever washes up on the island. You could also say he is a child of his time and culture. Making masks and seeing waste as a resource is a deeply embedded part of African culture. Djibril has a practiced eye like that of an elite athlete. From the stock of materials he has collected in his studio, he selects the parts of his masks.

He recognizes a (part of) an eye, a jaw, a skull, the hairline or the beginning of a shape. If someone else looks, it is garbage, and if you recognize anything at all, the experience of making something good out of it is missing. His work for more than 30 years has been modern, traditional and distinctive.
